Le Réseau Aga Khan de développement (AKDN) a commencé à œuvrer en Afghanistan en 1996 par la distribution d’une aide alimentaire pendant la guerre civile. Depuis 2002, l'AKDN et ses partenaires ont consacré plus d'un milliard de dollars au développement du pays.

Aujourd’hui, l’AKDN mène des activités dans les domaines de l’aide humanitaire et du développement économique, social et culturel. Nos projets économiques s'étendent à plus de 240 villes et villages à travers les 34 provinces du pays. Notre travail humanitaire et de développement social se concentre sur 61 districts dans sept provinces, atteignant plus de trois millions de personnes. Nos programmes culturels, mis en œuvre à Kaboul, Hérat, Balkh et dans le Badakhchan, ont permis de restaurer 90 édifices historiques.
Nous travaillons pour consolider les institutions du pays et le secteur public et veillons à impliquer les communautés et les dirigeants locaux dans ce processus. Dans le secteur privé, nous apportons notre soutien à la Chambre de commerce afghane, aux associations d'entreprises et aux entrepreneurs. Nous renforçons également les capacités des organisations de la société civile, que nous considérons comme des partenaires essentiels de notre travail, et étendons, par exemple, nos programmes d'épargne communautaire à des quartiers plus lointains.
Notre objectif est de permettre au pays de se développer grâce au travail des institutions afghanes et au travers de partenariats entre le gouvernement, les entreprises et la société civile. Nous sommes convaincus que ce travail mènera l'Afghanistan vers la stabilité et la prospérité.
L'égalité des genres est l'un de nos principaux objectifs. Notre approche s'attaque ainsi aux barrières sociales, encourage une prise de décision équitable et facilite l'émancipation des femmes et des jeunes filles en leur permettant de s’exprimer et d’agir.
