The West Nile Rural Electrification Company in Uganda: Generating hope for a brighter future
Prior to the presence of WENRECO's hydropower plant in the Arua area of Uganda, there were only four primary schools, six secondary schools and four technical institutes receiving electricity. Today, 18 primary schools, 16 secondary schools and 16 technical institutes are connected to the grid. Other benefits of hydroelectricity have been felt in the business community, which has also expanded. There have also been improvements in social services, security and regional stability.

The Aga Khan Foundation works with 150 Parent Teacher Associations and School Management committees
We work with civil society organisations to strengthen their systems, with particular attention to challenges facing girls and those with disabilities. We help community-based savings groups to access formal financial institutions. We give vulnerable youth employability and life skills.
Early Childhood Development

The early childhood education programme has benefitted over 60,000 children
We have supported the creation of over 100 locally owned early childhood development centres and run a nursery programme in Kampala for 400 children.
Economic Development

The Bujagali Hydropower Project supplies 33 percent of the electricity in the country
We have established economically sound enterprises in finance, energy, hospitality and media. These provide employment and offer much-needed services, with profits reinvested in other development initiatives. We offer financial literacy training and support savings groups.
Education

The Aga Khan Foundation reaches over 52,000 learners in Uganda
AKDN provides education from early childhood up to postgraduate level. We operate four schools, offer professional training to nurses, teachers and managers, and strengthen the quality of pre-primary and primary education in Uganda.
Health

725 nurses have graduated from the Aga Khan University (AKU) in Uganda
AKU has established four medical centres in Kampala, offering consultations and referrals to specialist services. Its School of Nursing and Midwifery offers tailored professional nursing courses and a degree programme in midwifery.
